Amanda Aldridge and Avril Coleridge-Taylor: Getting The Tempo Right

By Stephen Bourne (guest author)

We are delighted to announce the publication of a new book by Stephen Bourne. Best known for ‘Black Poppies: Britain’s Black Community and the Great War’, Stephen is the author of several published books.

We were delighted when he approached us about publishing a short book about Amanda Ira Aldridge and Avril Coleridge-Taylor, two under-rated, mixed heritage female composers (both daughters of famous fathers). With a long-standing  interest in both, we are thrilled to help Stephen bring their stories to a wider audience.

Introducing Sarah Woodbine

This recent book tells the remarkable, previously untold story of a Black nurse in Britain over fifty years before the founding of the NHS. We know the part played by nurses from overseas in the early years of the NHS but Sarah Woodbine was working in Britain from 1894.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1871, Sarah travelled to England as a teenager with the express intention of training to be a nurse. She achieved her objective but experienced prejudice and opposition because of the colour of her skin along the way. The authors have pieced together the story of her time in England and established how she, a British citizen, came to be living in Argentina.

Royalties from the sale of this book will be donated to NHS Charities Together.

The story of Mona Baptiste

This book tells the story of Mona Batiste, passenger No.7 when the Empire Windrush made her historic voyage to England in 1948. Mona went from humble beginnings in Trinidad to international stardom. This is the first full biography of her remarkable life.

Three Black brothers in World War One

Co-written with Maria Downer, The Walker Brothers And Their Legacy tells the story of her father and two uncles who served with the British West Indies Regiment during the First World War.  Her father survived, obviously, but one of her uncles didn’t, and during the writing of the story we were able to visit his grave in Marseilles.

Three stories for children

We have produced three books aimed at early readers. In each case a short story takes two girls back in time to meet a historical figure they have never heard of. They have a tough job convincing the adults in their lives about who they have met but, if they are making it up, where did those feathers come from? The stories are followed by biographical information about who they met.

Pioneering Black Footballers

Not everyone is interested in football but our book about the first black player at each of the 92 Football League clubs covers the span of black British history from 1886 to the late 20th century. Along the way the stories of these pioneering players deliver fascinating insights into the way Britain has changed.
